A Historic Milestone for Sustainable Mobility in Burundi

Bujumbura, Burundi – March 13

What began as an ambitious vision has become a groundbreaking reality.

Growth Energy, in partnership with GEM e-Mobility and under the leadership of Solio Group, proudly celebrates the launch of East Africa’s first fully solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station—a transformative achievement that marks a new chapter for clean transportation and renewable energy across the region.

This milestone is more than the inauguration of a charging station. It represents a bold statement about the future we believe in: a future powered by clean energy, driven by innovation, and built on sustainable infrastructure.

From Vision to Reality

Several years ago, the idea of creating a fully solar-powered EV charging ecosystem in East Africa seemed ambitious. Today, that vision stands proudly in Bujumbura as a functioning reality.

Through months of planning, engineering, collaboration, and determination, teams from Growth Energy, GEM e-Mobility, and Solio Group worked tirelessly to bring this pioneering project to life.

The result is a charging station powered entirely by solar energy, providing a clean, reliable, and sustainable alternative to conventional transportation infrastructure.

Why This Matters

Transportation remains one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions globally. At the same time, many African economies continue to face challenges related to fuel dependency and rising energy costs.

This project directly addresses those challenges by:

  • Reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels
  • Accelerating the adoption of electric mobility
  • Supporting local innovation and technical expertise
  • Creating green jobs and economic opportunities
  • Strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure
  • Contributing to Burundi’s long-term sustainability goals

By combining renewable energy generation with electric mobility, this initiative demonstrates how African-led innovation can create practical solutions for modern urban challenges.

A Shared Commitment to a Greener Future

The launch ceremony brought together government leaders, development partners, financial institutions, industry experts, and sustainability advocates who share a common vision for a cleaner and more resilient future.

Speaking at the event, Solio Group CEO Evrard Havyarimana emphasized the broader significance of the project:

“This project goes beyond technology—it represents our vision for a cleaner, more resilient future for East Africa. It demonstrates what is possible when innovation, sustainability, and collaboration come together.”

The presence of key stakeholders highlighted the growing momentum behind sustainable mobility solutions and reaffirmed the region’s commitment to green economic development.

Innovation Powered by the Sun

The station stands as a symbol of what is possible when renewable energy and transportation converge.

Powered entirely by solar energy, the facility enables electric vehicles to recharge using clean electricity generated on-site, reducing environmental impact while increasing energy independence.

As electric mobility continues to expand across Africa, projects like this create the foundation for a new generation of transportation infrastructure that is cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable.

Looking Ahead

This launch is not the finish line—it is the beginning.

Growth Energy remains committed to advancing renewable energy solutions that create measurable impact for communities, businesses, and future generations.

Together with our partners, we will continue exploring innovative ways to expand clean energy access, support sustainable transportation, and accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon economy.

The successful launch of East Africa’s first fully solar-powered EV charging station proves that the future of mobility is already here—and it is powered by the sun.

Thank You to Our Partners

This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support, expertise, and collaboration of our partners, stakeholders, engineers, and project teams.

To everyone who contributed to turning this vision into reality: thank you for being part of this historic journey.

Together, we are building a cleaner future for Burundi, East Africa, and generations to come.
